Beginning Herbal Medicine Making

In this hands-on class we will learn the basic techniques of herbal medicine making, creating several types of tinctures, a healing salve, and hand crafted tea blend.  All of the combinations we create will be appropriate for the summer season to help keep us in optimal health. We'll discuss how to incorporate medicinal herbs into our everyday cooking.  You will leave the class with samples of our creations, as well as recipes you can make at home.  Bring a notebook, pen, and a basket to take home all your medicines!  *Tea and vegetarian snacks include

Are you ready to heal the planet?  Are you tired of living in a monocultural existance?  R.O.O.T.S. is a one of a kind Permaculture Design Course (PDC) exploring the indigenous origins of permaculture concepts taught from culturally relevant perspectives from a diverse group of people.  We will be creating space for understanding our roles as stewards and reclaiming empowerment through holistic design methods.  Our goal is to deliver knowledge and an experience that facilitates connected oneness with mother earth and healing for our collective spirit!

 

Reclaiming Origins of Traditional Sustainability is an all inclusive PDC, offering the international standard 72-hour permaculture curriculum with an emphasis on the indigenous origins of permaculture concepts and hands on design and implementation.  We space the course over four long weekends to aid in accessibility for those who are working and have families.

Flower Essences and Hydrosol Distillation

In this 2 part class, we will spend the morning discussing the healing properties of hydrosols and their use. After a short lecture all students will participate in a hydrosol distillation using an alembic and the stove top method. We will spend the afternoon discussing flower essences, their use and importance to healing the energetic body, and create a flower essence using the waters from our distillation. All students will go home with a powerful hydrosol/flower essence combo and flower essence.

Healing With the Seasons: Summer Class

The Healing with the Season series is a set of classes wherein we explore the outer, inner, and secret elements. We will look at these elements through the eyes of the 24 Qi Nodes that define the seasons according to the Chinese lunar calendar. We will discuss how to calibrate and synchronize our qi with Nature by working with the elemental qualities of conduct, practice, food, medicine, and environment. In this way, we can extract its lessons and virtues, and become fully alive connecting to the body’s innate intelligence and skillful means.

During our break, we will try a couple of dishes that are infused with seasonal herbs that we have discussed during class to illustrate how food can be medicine

 

 

Foundations and Therapeutics of Herbal Body Care

Dates: Saturday and Sunday August 12th and 13th

Time: Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 10am-4pm

Cost: $100 per day (2 day discount $225 total)

The science of cosmetology is said to have originated in ancient Egyptian civilization with stories of how well Cleopatra pampered herself using nature’s medicine cabinet.  In this two day intensive we will let our creative juices flow and our skin glow as we explore the world of home-made natural bath and body care.

 

Day one we will immerse ourselves in the ultimate pampering spa experience learning the foundations of natural and vegan herbal body care while we indulge ourselves with fresh organic skin food. We will create exfoliating face & body scrubs, nourishing face creams and stimulating body masks. You will walk away feeling rejuvenated from the inside out with tricks in your medicine bag on how to deeply self-nourish anytime you please.   Day Two we will dive deeper into therapeutics looking at specific skin types and recipes for common skin conditions like eczema, acne, dandruff and more.  We will go over custom designed formulas and methods for more refined cosmetics.  The weekend will be filled with lecture, hands on medicine making, aromatherapy basics, and glorious applications. You will receive a list of herbs and oils that best feed and nourish your skin type and a bounty of treats, as well as a handful of tried and true recipes.  This class is geared toward all levels of students.

*Herbal tea and homemade vegetarian lunch included.  Youth ages 10 and up are welcome.

What To Bring:  A basket to transport your homemade goodies, as well as a notebook and pencil.

 

 

Running Nose and Colds: An Ayurvedic Approach to Care

A first class in understanding Ayurvedic care at home, based on clinical applications of the Ayurveda classical texts. Learn how to think about physiological processes in the body from the Ayurvedic perspective, based on the 5 Great Elements of Nature. Plus, learn a few "go-to" home remedies for use whenever yourself or someone you know senses some imbalance coming on that is most closely described as a 'cold' in Ayurveda's textual descriptions of imbalanced states of health.
